More Than a Credit Union: Part of Jacksonville’s History
Ducote Federal Credit Union served Jacksonville for nearly eight decades, with roots dating back to 1938. Created to serve educators in Duval County, the credit union became an important financial institution within Jacksonville’s Black community at a time when access to traditional financial services was far from equal.
Historical records describe Ducote as a credit union organized for the benefit of Duval County school teachers. Research from the University of North Florida also documents Ducote as a Black-owned and operated financial institution that played a particularly important role in Jacksonville during the segregation era.
That history makes Ducote’s story about much more than banking.
It is a story about educators, families, and neighbors creating greater access to financial opportunity within their own community.
Deep Roots in Jacksonville’s Durkeeville Community
Ducote’s history is closely connected to one of Jacksonville’s most historically significant neighborhoods.
A Financial Institution Built Around Community
Ducote Federal Credit Union became closely associated with historic Durkeeville in Northwest Jacksonville, a community that developed during an era when segregation limited where Black Jacksonville residents could live, shop, and access many services.
University of North Florida research describes Ducote as an important source of financial access for Jacksonville’s African American community. In the 1960s, it was identified as the only credit union serving African American residents in Jacksonville. (UNF Digital Commons)
Its longtime location at 2212 Myrtle Avenue North became part of the neighborhood’s history as well. The building remains recognizable in Durkeeville today and has since continued a tradition of community service as the home of Families of Slain Children, Inc. (The Jaxson)
For generations of Jacksonville residents, however, that address represented something else: a place where members could save, borrow and build greater financial security.
Ducote demonstrated what the credit union movement can accomplish at its best — neighbors pooling their resources so more people have access to financial opportunity.
Founded by Educators, Built for Opportunity
Education was at the heart of Ducote Federal Credit Union from the beginning.
Helping Jacksonville Teachers Help One Another
Historical research traces the creation of Ducote Federal Credit Union to Jacksonville educator W.D. Sweet and fellow members of the local teaching community.
The purpose was practical and powerful: give teachers a place to save money and borrow when they needed it without relying on lending options that could be difficult to access or prohibitively expensive.
That cooperative structure reflects the fundamental difference between a credit union and a traditional bank.
Credit unions are member-owned financial cooperatives. Members save together, borrow from the cooperative, and share in an institution designed around their financial needs.
For Ducote’s early members, that model created something particularly meaningful — greater financial independence during a time when Black Jacksonville residents frequently faced barriers elsewhere in the financial system.
What began with educators ultimately became a Jacksonville institution with a legacy spanning generations.
75 Years of People Helping People
The longevity of Ducote Federal Credit Union says something important about the institution its members created.
Generations of Jacksonville Families
In 2013, Ducote Federal Credit Union celebrated 75 years of service to Jacksonville.
Members gathered not simply to recognize the anniversary of a financial institution, but to remember decades of membership, friendships, and shared history.

By then, Jacksonville and the financial services industry looked very different from the city Ducote’s founders knew in 1938.
But one thing had remained remarkably consistent: the importance of a financial institution that knew its members and understood the community it served.
Ducote Federal Credit Union and Jax Federal Credit Union
After nearly eight decades of independent service, Ducote entered a new chapter in its Jacksonville story.
Two Jacksonville Credit Union Histories Come Together
In 2016, Ducote Federal Credit Union merged with Jax Federal Credit Union.
The merger became effective on November 1, 2016, bringing Ducote members into another Jacksonville-based credit union with its own long history of serving the First Coast. Ducote’s Myrtle Avenue branch closed just before the merger became effective.
The merger marked the end of Ducote Federal Credit Union as a separate institution — but not the end of its story.
Its members became part of Jax Federal Credit Union, carrying decades of Ducote history into the combined organization.
In 2023, Jax Federal Credit Union rebranded as RadiFi Credit Union, creating the name our members know today.
That means Ducote’s history is also part of RadiFi’s history.
A Legacy That Continues at RadiFi
Names change. Technology changes. Communities grow. But some ideas are worth carrying forward.
Still Rooted in Jacksonville. Still Focused on People.
Today’s RadiFi Credit Union serves a much larger and more diverse membership than either credit union could have imagined in their earliest years.
Members can open accounts online, deposit checks from a phone, manage their finances through digital banking and access products and services that would have looked futuristic to the founders of Ducote.
Yet the cooperative idea behind the credit union remains remarkably familiar.
Financial institutions should help people move forward.
They should create access to tools that help members save, borrow, build businesses, purchase homes and strengthen their financial lives.
And they should remain connected to the communities they serve.
Those principles were central to Ducote Federal Credit Union’s role in Jacksonville, and they remain relevant today.
